The Justin & Mary Lighting Intensive

Categories: Business & Photography.

A few weeks ago, Justin & Mary announced they were adding yet another crazy twist and turn to their already nutso schedules…they were going to host a lighting workshop at several cities on the east coast. Now, I’m no impulse buy kind of person. I think every purchase over for as long as possible, I read reviews, think about my budget, and make sure that I’m making the right decision. That morning when I read the Lighting Intensive announcement and that they’d be in Richmond over my trip back to Maryland at the beginning of July – I became an impulse buy kind of person. I have been struggling with artificial lighting this year and REALLY wanted to nab a seat before they were all gone.
So last Wednesday, I made my way to Richmond and had the opportunity to learn from two of the best. I’m not going to lie, after the week I’d had, I was tiiiiired. It was a stretch for me to be able to absorb everything with any type of pep because I was just drained. So I sat quietly, took notes, listened, made a few new friends, and was amazed at the simplicity of the one light setup.

Justin & Mary are the kind of people who make you think. I don’t know what it is about them – I wish I could pin point it. So not only did I leave with a lot of new tools in my on and off camera lighting tool bag, but I left with some really big seeds planted that I have been thinking and re-thinking this week. It’s made me step back, think about why I’m really doing this, what I want to give my clients, and how important my job is in the scheme of these peoples lives and the memories they are passing on to generations after them. Really good stuff.

Below are a few images from the evening. Justin & Mary spent the first part of the workshop teaching, and then we were able to practice on one another a bit. Toward the end of the evening, we had a few models come in and some details set up to shoot and practice using a few of the lighting setups. Obviously I’m aware you can see the backdrop and other background elements in these shots, but it actually makes me love these more :)
There are still a few more dates on the J&M Lighting Intensive tour, so if you’re considering purchasing a seat, use “alum50” to save $50 :)
